The difference between a beginner and a fast VHOLUME player isn't reflexes — it's what you think about while moving. This page covers momentum tricks, ghost coaching, and the exact mistakes that cost you seconds.

Wall-Run Acceleration

The single biggest leverage point in VHOLUME speed is how you use walls. A wall is a springboard, not a road — your goal is to trigger the wall-run acceleration and immediately jump away, not to stay attached for as long as possible.

When you spot two walls close enough to alternate between, chain them. Each contact preserves momentum far better than a single long wall-run. This is especially effective in the demo's tighter Conapt corridors.

Slide Into Jump

Sliding is the most underestimated mechanic in VHOLUME. A normal landing after a drop kills your forward momentum; a slide immediately after the landing turns that drop into a launch. The pattern that wins speedruns is:

  1. Drop or land from a wall.
  2. Slide (crouch) on contact.
  3. Jump out of the slide.

Each one of these three actions is small. Chained together, they're the difference between a top-100 time and a top-10 time. Losing half a second at three different points is enough to flip a winning run into a second-place finish.

Stop Following the Obvious Route

The fastest route in any VHOLUME level is almost never the route that looks correct. The brutalist architecture is deliberately vertical and maze-like, with beams, pipes, ledges, rooftops and slit windows that can become part of your route.

Whenever you enter a new area, don't look for the obvious doorway. Look up. Then look behind you. Then look for somewhere that appears completely unreasonable to reach. That's usually where things get interesting.

A few reliable exploits to look for:

  • Speed boosts from oblique angles — they don't have to be hit head-on.
  • Jump pads from the side, not the obvious path.
  • Wall bounces in cramped areas where two walls form a corner.
  • Slope chains — a single slope might be slower than three smaller ones if you can transition cleanly.

Ghost Coaching

VHOLUME's ghost system is, in practice, free movement coaching. Loading a top player's ghost and following it carefully is the single fastest way to learn the real line through a level.

You might already know how to slide, wall-run, and wall-bounce. Watching a top run will show you that you're doing those actions in the wrong places — entering a slide three meters earlier, skipping an entire platform, or using a wall you never noticed. Treat ghost racing as a study tool before you treat it as competition.

Training Loop

Separate exploration from optimization. The fastest path to a better time isn't grinding a single full run — it's this loop:

  1. First run: Learn the map. Don't watch the clock. Find strange walls, test jumps, look for alternate routes.
  2. Second & third runs: Identify where you're losing momentum. Make a mental note of each cost.
  3. Section practice: Pick the one wall-run or slide-to-jump that keeps failing. Practice just that section until it's consistent.
  4. Full run with a loaded ghost: Race it. Find one new optimization per attempt.

Don't worry about setting a world-record time on your first attempts. Your first objective should be "remove one mistake." Then another. Eventually, the route that once felt chaotic becomes muscle memory.

Settings That Matter

One setting to fix before blaming your PC: Temporal Super Resolution (TSR). On some systems TSR pushes GPU utilization to the ceiling while delivering lower frame rates — and in a momentum game, a single dropped frame can cost you a run. If your framerate is inconsistent, switch TSR off or to a cheaper AA mode. Stable frames > pretty frames.

Recommended competitive settings baseline:

  • Anti-aliasing: Off TSR, or use a cheaper alternative if you need it
  • Resolution: Native or a sensible downscale — don't lean on upscaling for competitive play
  • V-Sync: Off first to reduce input latency
  • Graphics quality: Medium/High depending on hardware; visuals matter less than stable frame pacing
